Grammatical Gender: Masculine, Feminine, and Neuter in Romanian

Grammatical Gender and the Neuter (Ambigene)

Romanian uniquely preserves three genders: masculine, feminine, and neuter (ambigene), which behaves masculine in the singular and feminine in the plural.

Unlike Spanish, Italian, and French—which collapsed the Latin neuter gender into the masculine—Romanian uniquely preserves a *Three-Gender System (genul masculin, feminin, neutru)*.

The *Neuter Gender (genul neutru), also termed ambigene, exhibits a fascinating structural asymmetry: it behaves strictly as masculine in the singular, and strictly as feminine in the plural: - Singular indefinite: un scaun confortabil (a comfortable chair — takes masculine un and masculine adjective ending). - Plural indefinite: două scaune confortabile (two comfortable chairs — takes feminine două and feminine plural ending -e). - Compare with masculine un băiat / doi băieți and feminine o fată / două fete*.

Gender Identification Rules: 1. *Masculine (masculin): Usually ends in a consonant (bărbat, pom, lup) or vowel -e (câine, frate). Plural takes -i (lupi, frați). 2. Feminine (feminin): Typically ends in (casă, fată), -e (carte, noapte), or accented vowels (cafea, zi). Plural takes -e or -i (case, cărți). 3. Neuter (neutru): Usually designates inanimate objects/abstractions ending in consonants or -u (hotel, tren, teatru, stilou). Plural takes -uri (trenuri, hoteluri) or -e (teatre, scaune*).

Learners must memorize the gender alongside the plural form of every Romanian noun to ensure correct adjective and article agreement.
