Plural Formation & Sound Alternations in Romanian
Plural Formation and Stem Alternations
Romanian forms plurals with endings -i, -e, -uri, triggering complex stem vowel (o/oa, e/ea) and consonant (t/ț, d/z, s/ș, c/ce) alternations.
Forming the plural of Romanian nouns involves both suffixation and widespread *morphophonological sound alternations (alternanțe fonetice)* inside the root stem:
1. Plural Endings by Gender: - Masculine: Takes -i: student → studenți, pom → pomi, frate → frați. (Notice the palatalizing effect of final -i on stem consonants). - Feminine: Takes -e or -i: casă → case, fată → fete, carte → cărți, ușă → uși. - Neuter: Takes -uri or -e: tren → trenuri, hotel → hoteluri, oraș → orașe, scaun → scaune.
2. Core Consonant Alternations (Triggered by Plural -i): - t → ț: băiat → băieți, frate → frați, carte → cărți. - d → z: stradă → străzi, brad → brazi, oglindă → oglinzi. - s → ș: urs → urși, pas → pași, masă → mese. - c → ci [tʃ] / g → gi [dʒ]: copac → copaci, coleg → colegi.
3. Core Vowel Alternations: - o → oa: școală → școli (reverse in plural), fereastră → ferestre. - a → e / ă: fată → fete, masă → mese, băiat → băieți.
Failing to apply these stem alternations is one of the most visible indicators of non-native speech.
