Adjective Agreement & 4 Inflection Classes in Romanian

In Romanian, *Adjectives (adjectivele) must obligatorily agree in Gender, Number, and Case with the noun they modify. Based on the number of distinct phonetic endings they display across masculine/feminine singular/plural, Romanian adjectives are classified into Four Morphological Inflection Classes*:

1. 4-Ending Class (Quadri-form): Distinct form for each gender and number combination: - bun (masc. sg.), bună (fem. sg.), buni (masc. pl.), bune (fem./neut. pl.). - frumos, frumoasă, frumoși, frumoase; nou, nouă, noi, noi. 2. 3-Ending Class (Tri-form): Displays 3 distinct forms (sharing plural between masculine and feminine or sharing singular): - Ending in -esc: românesc (masc. sg.), românească (fem. sg.), românești (plural all genders). - Ending in -g / -c: lung (masc. sg.), lungă (fem. sg.), lungi (plural all genders). 3. 2-Ending Class (Bi-form): Only distinguishes Singular from Plural regardless of gender (usually ending in -e or -tor): - mare (masc./fem. sg.) → mari (masc./fem. pl.): un băiat mare, o fată mare, băieți mari, fete mari. - dulce (sg.) → dulci (pl.); verde (sg.) → verzi (pl.). 4. Invariable Adjectives (1 Form): Mostly modern loanwords describing colors or qualities that never inflect: - oranj, bej, gri, roz, gata, eficace, precoce (o cămașă oranj, niște pantofi bej).

Remember that Neuter nouns take masculine adjective forms in the singular (un scaun bun) and feminine forms in the plural (două scaune bune).
