Adjective Position & Semantic Shift in Romanian
Adjective Position and Semantic Shift (om mare vs. mare om)
Adjectives neutrally follow nouns (om bun), but anteposition before nouns adds rhetorical emphasis, takes the definite article (frumoasa fată), and can alter meaning (un om mare vs. un mare om).
In standard Romanian syntax, the canonical, neutral position of an adjective is Post-nominal (placed immediately after the noun it modifies): un student harnic* (a hardworking student), o carte interesantă* (an interesting book).
1. Anteposition and the Enclitic Article Transfer: When an adjective is placed before the noun (Anteposition) for stylistic, poetic, or affective emphasis, the enclitic definite article attaches directly to the adjective, leaving the subsequent noun unarticulated: - Neutral post-nominal: fata frumoasă (the beautiful girl) - Emphatic anteposition: frumoasa fată (the beautiful girl!) - omul bun → bunul om (the good man) - orașul vechi → vechiul oraș (the old city).
2. Semantic Shift Based on Position: For a notable group of qualitative adjectives, shifting position drastically alters the semantic meaning from literal physical description (post-nominal) to figurative subjective evaluation (pre-nominal): - mare: un om mare* (a tall/large man) vs. un mare om (a great/distinguished man) - bun: o bucată bună (a tasty piece) vs. o bună bucată de timp (a good/substantial amount of time) - sărac: un om sărac (a poor/penniless man) vs. un sărac om (a pitiful/unfortunate man) - vechi: o mașină veche (an old/aged car) vs. un vechi prieten* (a long-time/old friend).
