Comparative & Superlative Degrees in Romanian
Degrees of Comparison (mai, cel mai, foarte)
Romanian forms degrees of comparison analytically: comparative with mai (mai mare decât), relative superlative with cel mai, and absolute with foarte.
Degrees of comparison for Romanian adjectives and adverbs are constructed purely analytically via adverbial particles, avoiding synthetic suffixation:
*1. Comparative of Superiority (Comparativul de superioritate): - Formed with mai (more) + adjective + decât (than): - Mihai este mai înalt decât Andrei (Mihai is taller than Andrei). - Cartea aceasta este mai interesantă decât filmul* (This book is more interesting than the movie).
2. Comparative of Equality and Inferiority: - Equality: la fel de ... ca or tot așa de ... ca (la fel de bun ca tine = just as good as you). - Inferiority: mai puțin ... decât (mai puțin scump decât celălalt = less expensive than the other).
*3. Relative Superlative (Superlativul relativ): - Formed by prepending the adjectival article cel / cea / cei / cele + mai: - Masc. sg.: cel mai bun student (the best student) - Fem. sg.: cea mai frumoasă floare (the most beautiful flower) - Masc. pl.: cei mai mari savanți (the greatest scientists) - Fem./Neut. pl.: cele mai scumpe cărți* (the most expensive books).
*4. Absolute Superlative (Superlativul absolut): - Formed using foarte (very), extrem de (extremely), or nemaipomenit de (unbelievably): o carte foarte bună* (a very good book).
