Indefinite Articles (un, o, niște) in Romanian
Indefinite Articles (un, o, niște)
Romanian uses pre-posed indefinite articles: un (masc./neuter sg.), o (fem. sg.), and niște (plural for all genders / some).
Unlike the enclitic definite article, the *Indefinite Article (articolul nehotărât) in Romanian precedes the noun, functioning much like a/an/some in English or un/une/des* in French.
Forms in the Nominative/Accusative: 1. Masculine Singular: un (un băiat = a boy, un pom = a tree, un prieten = a friend). 2. Neuter Singular: un (behaving masculine in the singular: un tren = a train, un scaun = a chair, un hotel = a hotel). 3. Feminine Singular: o (o fată = a girl, o casă = a house, o carte = a book, o floare = a flower). 4. Plural (All Genders): niște (niște băieți = some boys, niște fete = some girls, niște trenuri = some trains).
Mass Nouns & Partitive Usage: Niște is also employed with singular uncountable/mass nouns with a partitive meaning equivalent to English 'some' (niște apă = some water, niște pâine = some bread, niște zahăr = some sugar).
In the oblique Genitive/Dative case, indefinite articles take special inflected forms: unui (masc./neuter sg.), unei (fem. sg.), and unor (plural all genders).
