Prepositions Governing the Genitive Case in Romanian

While simple prepositions in Romanian govern the Accusative, a distinct and structurally vital class of *Complex and Locational Prepositions (Prepoziții și locuțiuni prepoziționale cu genitivul) strictly governs the Genitive Case (cazul genitiv)*:

1. Primary Genitive Prepositions: - împotriva / contra (against): împotriva voinței mele (against my will), împotriva dușmanilor (against the enemies). - înaintea* (before / in front of in time/space): înaintea plecării (before departure), înaintea casei (in front of the house). - deasupra (above / over): deasupra orașului (above the city), deasupra mesei (above the table). - dedesubtul (beneath / under): dedesubtul patului (beneath the bed). - împrejurul / în jurul (around): în jurul focului (around the fire), în jurul lumii* (around the world).

Prepositional Phrases with Genitive (Locuțiuni prepoziționale): - în fața (in front of): în fața teatrului (in front of the theater). - în spatele (behind): în spatele clădirii (behind the building). - în mijlocul (in the middle of): în mijlocul pădurii (in the middle of the forest). - din cauza (because of / due to): din cauza ploii (due to the rain). - în timpul (during): în timpul conferinței* (during the conference).

When used with personal pronouns, these prepositions take possessive forms rather than genitive pronouns: în fața mea* (in front of me), împotriva lui* (against him).
