Auxiliary Verbs: 'a fi' (to be) & 'a avea' (to have) in Romanian

Auxiliary Verbs (a fi and a avea)

The irregular verbs a fi (sunt, ești, este, suntem, sunteți, sunt) and a avea (am, ai, are, avem, aveți, au) form essential compound tenses and passives.

The two foundational pillars of Romanian verbal morphosyntax are the highly irregular auxiliary verbs a fi (to be) and a avea (to have).

1. Conjugation of 'a fi' (to be): - eu sunt (I am) - tu ești (you are) - el/ea este or e (he/she is) - noi suntem (we are) - voi sunteți (you are) - ei/ele sunt (they are). Note: In colloquial speech, este is almost universally shortened to e (El e student).

2. Conjugation of 'a avea' (to have): - eu am (I have) - tu ai (you have) - el/ea are (he/she has) - noi avem (we have) - voi aveți (you have) - ei/ele au (they have).

Auxiliary Roles in Compound Tenses: - a avea is the universal auxiliary for the Perfect Compus (past tense) with the past participle: Am citit (I have read), Ai văzut (You saw). - a fi serves as the auxiliary for the Passive Voice (Cartea este citită = The book is read) and the Past Subjunctive / Past Conditional (să fi știut, aș fi venit).
