The Compound Past (Perfectul Compus) in Romanian

Compound Past (Perfectul Compus)

The main spoken past tense in Romanian, formed with the auxiliary a avea (am, ai, a, am, ați, au) + past participle (citit, văzut, făcut).

The *Compound Past (Perfectul Compus) is the standard, universal past tense in modern spoken and written Romanian, used for completed actions regardless of how long ago they occurred (equivalent to English Simple Past / Present Perfect, French Passé Composé, or Italian Passato Prossimo*).

Formation Engine: Auxiliary 'a avea' + Past Participle (Participiu)

Auxiliary Forms: - eu am* - tu ai - el/ea a (Notice a, distinct from present are!) - noi am - voi ați - ei/ele au*.

*Past Participle Endings (Participiul): - 1st conj. (-a): adds -at (a cântacântat, a lucralucrat). - 2nd conj. (-ea): adds -ut (a vedeavăzut, a aveaavut). - 3rd conj. (-e): takes -ut (a vindevândut) or -s/-pt (a mergemers, a facefăcut, a scriescris). - 4th conj. (-i/-î): adds -it / -ât (a citicitit, a auziauzit, a hotărîhotărât*).

Crucial Rule on Participle Invariance: In active voice, the past participle in Romanian is completely invariable in gender and number (Eu am citit, Maria a citit, Ei au citit), unlike French/Italian where participles frequently agree with preceding direct objects.
