The Imperfect Tense (Imperfectul) in Romanian
Imperfect Tense (Imperfectul)
The imperfect (-am, -ai, -a, -am, -ați, -au) expresses continuous, habitual, or descriptive background past actions without definite boundaries.
The *Imperfect (Imperfectul) is the synthetic past tense of Romanian dedicated to expressing ongoing past processes, repeated habits ('used to do'), and descriptive backgrounds* in past narration.
Morphological Suffixation: The imperfect marker is -a- (for 1st conjugation verbs ending in -a) and -ea- (for all 2nd, 3rd, and 4th conjugation verbs), followed by standard imperfect personal endings: - 1st sg.: -am (cântam = I was singing / used to sing, citeam = I was reading) - 2nd sg.: -ai (cântai, citeai) - 3rd sg.: -a / -ea (cânta, citea) - 1st pl.: -am (cântam, citeam) - 2nd pl.: -ați (cântați, citeați) - 3rd pl.: -au (cântau, citeau).
Irregular Imperfect of 'a fi' (to be): eram, erai, era, eram, erați, erau.
Contrast with Perfect Compus: - Perfect Compus marks punctual, finished events that advance the narrative timeline: Când am intrat în cameră... (When I entered the room... punctual action). - Imperfect paints the background scenery and ongoing state: ...afară ploua și vântul bătea puternic (...outside it was raining and the wind was blowing strongly).
