Present Tense Verb Conjugation in Slovak

In Slovak grammar, the *Present Tense (Prítomný čas)* expresses ongoing current actions, general truths, and habitual routines. All regular verbs are categorized into four primary conjugation classes based on their 1st person singular ending:

1. The Four Primary Conjugation Classes: - *Class 1 (-ám / -ajú: e.g. čítať - to read, hľadať, volať): - čítam, čítaš, číta, čítame, čítate, čítajú. - (Subject to the Rhythmic Law: stems with preceding long syllable take short -am: bývať → bývam, bývajú). - Class 2 (-em / -ú: e.g. niesť - to carry, písať - to write): - píšem, píšeš, píše, píšeme, píšete, píšu. - Class 3 (-ím / -ia: e.g. robiť - to do/make, hovoriť - to speak, vidieť): - hovorím, hovoríš, hovorí, hovoríme, hovoríte, hovoria. - (Rhythmic variant: kúpiť → kúpim, kúpia). - Class 4 (-ujem / -ujú: e.g. študovať - to study, pracovať - to work, ďakovať): - študujem, študuješ, študuje, študujeme, študujete, študujú*.

2. 1st Person Plural Ending: Across all classes, the 1st person plural (my) ending is consistently -me / -me (čítame, píšeme, robíme, študujeme).

Learner Mistake: Forgetting the *Rhythmic Law (Rytmický zákon) in Class 1 and 3 verbs: if the root syllable is long, the personal ending shortens (býva-ť → bývam, never bývám; kúpi-ť → kúpim, never kúpím*).
