The Verb Byť (To Be) in Slovak Present Tense

The Verb Byť in Present Tense (Sloveso byť v prítomnom čase)

The irregular linking and auxiliary verb: som, si, je, sme, ste, sú; negated via separated prefix nie: nie som, nie si, nie je, nie sme, nie ste, nie sú.

In Slovak grammar, the irregular verb *byť (to be) is the foundational copula and auxiliary verb in the language. Unlike regular verbs (which take the prefixed negative ne-), byť is negated with the separate particle nie*:

1. Affirmative Conjugation in the Present: - ja som* (I am) - ty si (you are sg. informal) - on / ona / ono je (he / she / it is) - my sme (we are) - vy ste (you are pl. / formal) - oni / ony * (they are).

2. Negative Conjugation in the Present: - ja nie som* (I am not) - ty nie si (you are not) - on / ona / ono nie je (he / she / it is not) - my nie sme (we are not) - vy nie ste (you are not) - oni / ony nie sú* (they are not).

3. Core Functions: - *Predicate Copula (Spona): Som študent (I am a student), Bratislava je pekná (Bratislava is pretty). - Existence (Existenciálne použitie): Na stole je kniha (There is a book on the table). - Auxiliary for Past Tense (Minulý čas): Forms 1st/2nd person past: písal som, písali sme. - Auxiliary for Conditional Mood (Podmieňovací spôsob): písal by som*.

Learner Mistake: Writing nesom or neje. Slovak strictly uses the two-word spelling nie som, nie je, nie sme.
