Verbal Negation and Double Negatives in Slovak

In Slovak syntax, *Verbal Negation (Slovesný zápor) is formed morphologically by attaching the prefix ne-* directly to the verb stem, with standard double negation rules:

*1. Standard Prefixal Negation (ne-): - In standard Slovak, the negative particle ne- is written together with the verb as a single word: pracujem → nepracujem (I do not work), rozumiem → nerozumiem (I do not understand), čítal som → nečítal som (I did not read). - Irregular Verb 'Mať' (To have): Takes the merged prefix: mám → nemám (I don't have), máš → nemáš. - Irregular Verb 'Byť' (To be): Uses separate particle nie: som → nie som, je → nie je*.

*2. Mandatory Double Negation (Záporová zhoda): Whenever a negative pronoun or adverb (nikto, nič, nikdy, nikde, nijako, žiaden/nijaký) is present in a sentence, the verb must still take the negative prefix ne-: - Nikto to nevie. (Nobody knows it - lit. 'Nobody not-knows'). - Nikdy som tam nebol. (I have never been there). - Nič nekupujem.* (I am buying nothing).

Learner Mistake: Omitting the verb's negative prefix when a negative pronoun is present (Nikto vie instead of Nikto nevie), or writing ne separately with regular verbs (ne pracujem instead of nepracujem).
