Past Tense Formation in Slovak (Minulý čas)
Past Tense Formation (Minulý čas: l-participle + auxiliary byť)
Formed by combining the l-participle (-l, -la, -lo, -li) with the present auxiliary byť in 1st/2nd persons (čítal som, čítal si, čítali sme, čítali ste); 3rd person has NO auxiliary (on čítal, oni čítali).
In Slovak grammar, the *Past Tense (Minulý čas) is an analytic compound tense built from the past active participle in -l (l-ové príčastie) and the present clitic forms of the auxiliary verb byť*:
1. Formation of the L-Participle: Derived from the infinitive by replacing the suffix -ť with gender/number markers: - Masculine singular: -l (robiť → robil, písať → písal, čítať → čítal). - Feminine singular: -la (robila, písala, čítala). - Neuter singular: -lo (robilo, písalo, čítalo). - Plural (all genders): -li (robili, písali, čítali).
2. Person and Auxiliary Rules: - 1st person sg.: robil/robila som (I did / made) - 2nd person sg.: robil/robila si (you did) - 3rd person sg.: on robil / ona robila / ono robilo (*NO auxiliary je!) - 1st person pl.: robili sme (we did) - 2nd person pl.: robili ste (you pl./formal did) - 3rd person pl.: oni/ony robili (NO auxiliary sú!*).
3. Negation in the Past Tense: Negation prefix ne- is attached directly to the L-participle, while the auxiliary remains affirmative: - nečítal som (I did not read), neprišli sme (we did not come), nevedel (he did not know).
Learner Mistake: Adding je or sú to the third person (On je čítal or Oni sú prišli). In standard Slovak, 3rd person past NEVER uses an auxiliary verb (On čítal, Oni prišli).
