Second-Position Clitic Ordering in Slovak

In Slovak syntax, *Clitics (Príklonky / Enklitiky) are unstressed monosyllabic words that cannot stand independently at the beginning of a clause. They must cluster together in the second structural slot (Wackernagel's position)*, directly following the first accented phrase of the clause:

1. The Strict Internal Hierarchy of Slovak Clitics: When multiple clitics occur together, they MUST follow this fixed order: 1. Past Auxiliary / Conditional Particle: som, si, sme, ste OR by. 2. Reflexive Particles: sa, si. 3. Short Dative Pronouns: mi, ti, mu, jej, nám, vám, im. 4. Short Accusative Pronouns: ma, ťa, ho, ju, nás, vás, ich, to.

2. Illustrative Examples of the Order: - Včera som sa mu to snažil vysvetliť. (Aux som [1] + Refl sa [2] + Dat mu [3] + Acc to [4] = Yesterday I tried to explain it to him). - Veľmi rád by som ti to ukázal. (Conditional by [1] + Aux som [1b] + Dat ti [3] + Acc to [4]). - Peter si ho kúpil. (Refl si [2] + Acc ho [4]).

3. Absolute First-Position Ban: Clitics can NEVER begin a sentence or independent clause: - Incorrect: Sa učím po slovensky. - Correct: Učím sa po slovensky. OR Dnes sa učím po slovensky.

Learner Mistake: Scrambling clitics or putting accusative before dative (vysvetlil som to mu instead of vysvetlil som mu to).
