The Dative Case (Dativ) in Serbian

In Serbian grammar, the *Dative Case (Dativ / Treći padež) answers the interrogative pronouns Kome? (To whom?) and Čemu? (To what?)*. It expresses the intended recipient, orientation towards a goal, or emotional experiencer:

1. Primary Syntactic Roles: - Indirect Object (Recipient / Beneficiary): Dajem knjigu profesoru* (I give the book to the professor), Pomažem prijatelju (I help my friend). - Direction towards a goal (with prepositions k / ka): Idem ka centru (I am heading towards the center), k reci (towards the river). - Experiencer in Impersonal & Psychological Constructions: Meni se sviđa ovaj grad (I like this city, lit. 'to me pleases this city'), Njemu je hladno (He is cold), Koliko ti je godina?* (How old are you?).

2. Morphological Endings: - Masculine & Neuter singular: -u (profesoru, gradu, bratu, selu, polju). - Feminine singular: -i (ženi, sestri, knjizi with sibilarization k → c, g → z, h → s before -i: knjiga → knjizi, ruka → ruci). - Plural (Syncretism with Instrumental & Locative): All masculine and neuter nouns end in -ima (profesorima, gradovima, selima), while feminines end in -ama (ženama, sobama).

Morphological Syncretism: In modern Serbian, the forms of Dativ and Lokativ are completely identical in both singular and plural.
