Phonological Sound Changes (Glasovne promene) in Serbian
Sound Changes: Sibilarization, Palatalization, Jotation (Glasovne promene)
Systematic morphophonemic consonant mutations: Palatalization (k/g/h → č/ž/š before -e/-i), Sibilarization (k/g/h → c/z/s before -i in Dat./Loc.), and Jotation (d+j → đ, t+j → ć).
In Serbian historical morphology, regular *Sound Changes (Glasovne promene)* occur predictably across declension, comparison, and conjugation:
*1. Sibilarization (Sibilarizacija / Druga palatalizacija): - Velar consonants k, g, h mutate into dental sibilants c, z, s before vowel -i (in Dative/Locative singular of feminine nouns and Nominative plural of masculines): - ruka → ruci (in the hand) - kniga → knjizi (in the book) - svrha → svrsi (for the purpose) - učenik → učenici (students Nom. pl.), predlog → predlozi, orah → orasi*.
*2. First Palatalization (Palatalizacija): - Velars k, g, h mutate into postalveolars č, ž, š before front vowels -e / -i (in Vocative singular and present tense of E-verbs): - čovek → čoveče! (Vocative) - drug → druže! - muha → mušica - pek- → pečem (I bake), mog- → može* (can).
*3. Jotation (Jotovanje): - Fused mutation of non-palatal consonants with glide j into palatals across comparatives, past passive participles, and instrumental cases: - d + j → đ: mlad + ji → mlađi, grad + janski → građanski - t + j → ć: plati + jen → plaćen, ljut + ji → ljući - z + j → ž: brz + ji → brži - s + j → š: visok + ji → viši - Labials insert epenthetic l: skup + ji → skuplji, ljubav + ju → ljubavlju*.
