The Vocative Case (Vokativ) for Direct Address in Serbian
Vocative Case for Direct Address (5. padež – Vokativ)
A vibrant, fully preserved case used for directly calling, greeting, and addressing people, featuring distinctive endings -e, -u, -o and consonant palatalization.
In Serbian grammar, the *Vocative Case (Vokativ / Peti padež) is not a syntactic dependency case governed by verbs or prepositions; rather, it is a specialized grammatical form used exclusively for direct address, calling, greeting, and invoking persons (dozivanje, obraćanje)*:
1. Standard Vocative Endings: - *Masculine Hard Stems take -e (with First Palatalization k → č, g → ž, h → š, c → č): - čovek → čoveče! (man!) - drug → druže! (friend!) - profesor → profesore! - otac → oče! - Masculine Soft Stems (and -k/-g/-h derivatives) take -u: - prijatelj → prijatelju! - mladić → mladiću! - muž → mužu! - brat → brate! - Feminine Stems in -a take -o / -e: - Polysyllabic feminines take -o: žena → ženo!, sestra → sestro!, Jelena → Jeleno! - Feminine nouns ending in -ica take -e: profesorka → profesorko! vs. učiteljica → učiteljice!, Milica → Milice!*
2. Short Male First Names: Short two-syllable male names ending in -a or -o with rising accent often remain identical to the Nominative in spoken Serbian (Marko!, Nikola!, Luka!), while others take -e (Petre!, Miloše!).
Punctuation rule: A vocative form is always set off by commas in Serbian orthography (Dobar dan, profesore!).
