Dual Alphabet: Cyrillic & Latin Scripts in Serbian
Dual Alphabet: Cyrillic and Latin (Ćirilica i latinica)
Serbian is fully digraphic: both the official Cyrillic (azbuka, 30 letters) and Latin (abeceda, 30 letters) scripts represent the exact same phonemes in 1:1 correspondence.
Serbian is characterized by *Synchronic Digraphia (sinhronijska digrafija): it uses two official writing systems in parallel with an exact 1-to-1 phonemic mapping* for all 30 sounds of the language:
*1. Serbian Cyrillic (Srpska ćirilica / Azbuka): - Formulated by linguist Vuk Stefanović Karadžić based on the phonetic principle: «Piši kao što govoriš, a čitaj kao što je napisano» (Write as you speak, and read as it is written). - Contains 30 distinct single glyphs: А Б В Г Д Ђ Е Ж З И Ј К Л Љ М Н Њ О П Р С Т Ћ У Ф Х Ц Ч Џ Ш. - Special unique Cyrillic letters: Ђ/ђ (dj), Ј/ј (j), Љ/љ (lj), Њ/њ (nj), Ћ/ћ (ć), Џ/џ* (dž).
*2. Serbian Latin (Srpska latinica / Abeceda): - Adapted by Ljudevit Gaj to match the 30 Cyrillic phonemes precisely. - Uses 27 single letters plus 3 digraphs (lj, nj, dž): A B C Č Ć D Dž Đ E F G H I J K L Lj M N Nj O P R S Š T U V Z Ž*.
Usage and Register: Cyrillic is the constitutional official script of state institutions, official documents, and Serbian schoolbooks. Latin script is ubiquitous in modern commerce, road signs, technology, and internet communication. Both scripts are equally understood by all native speakers without any difference in vocabulary or grammar.
