Indefinite & Negative Pronouns in Serbian

In Serbian grammar, pronouns of quantity and reference are systematically generated by prefixing morphological morphemes to the base interrogatives *ko (who) and šta (what)*:

1. The Four Morphological Series: - Indefinite (Prefix NE-): neko (someone), nešto (something), nekakav (some kind of), negde (somewhere), nekada (sometime). - Negative (Prefix NI-): niko (nobody), ništa (nothing), nikakav (no kind of), nigde (nowhere), nikada (never). - Universal / Total (Prefix SVA-): svako (everyone), svašta (all sorts of things), svakakav (every kind of), svugde (everywhere), svagda / uvek (always). - Potential / Conditional (Prefix I-): iko (anyone at all), išta (anything at all), ikakav (any kind of at all), igde (anywhere at all), ikada (ever at all).

*2. The Crucial Tmesis Rule with Prepositions (Predloško razdvajanje): When negative (ni-) and potential (i-) pronouns combine with prepositions, the preposition MUST be inserted between the prefix and the pronoun stem as three separate words: - ni + sa + kim → ni sa kim (with nobody — NOT sa nikim!) - ni + o + čemu → ni o čemu (about nothing — NOT o ničemu!) - ni + za + koga → ni za koga (for nobody) - i + sa + kim → i sa kim* (with anyone at all).

Violating this separation (sa nikim, o ničemu) is a classic learner mistake condemned in standard Serbian.
