Verbal Negation & Double Negation in Serbian

In Serbian orthography and syntax, *Negation (Negacija)* adheres to two strict rules regarding word boundaries and multiple negative concordance:

1. The Separation Rule for 'ne' + Verb: - The negative particle ne is strictly written as a separate word before finite verbs: ne znam (I don't know), ne radim (I don't work), ne govorim (I don't speak), ne želim (I don't want). - Writing neznam or neradim is a major orthographic error in Serbian.

*2. The Four Fused Exceptions (Četiri izuzetka): In modern Serbian, exactly four verbs fuse the negative particle into a single word: 1. nisam, nisi, nije, nismo, niste, nisu (from biti) 2. neću, nećeš, neće, nećemo, nećete, neće (from hteti) 3. nemam, nemaš, nema, nemamo, nemate, nemaju (from imati) 4. nemoj, nemojmo, nemojte* (negative imperative auxiliary 'don't!').

*3. Mandatory Double/Multiple Negation (Dvostruka negacija): Whenever a clause contains negative pronouns or adverbs (niko = nobody, ništa = nothing, nikada = never, nigdje/nigde = nowhere, nikako = no way), the predicate verb MUST simultaneously take the negative particle 'ne': - Niko ne zna. (Nobody knows — literally: 'Nobody not knows'). - Nikada nisam bio tamo. (I have never been there). - Niko ništa ne govori.* (Nobody says anything).
