The Auxiliary Verbs Biti (to be) & Hteti (to want/will) in Serbian

Auxiliary Verbs: Biti and Hteti (Pomoćni glagoli)

Biti has tonic (jesam, jesi...), short clitic (sam, si, je, smo, ste, su), and negative forms (nisam); hteti has tonic (hoću, hoćeš...), short clitic (ću, ćeš, će), and negative forms (neću).

In Serbian grammar, the two auxiliary verbs biti (to be) and hteti (to want / will) are the backbone of all compound tenses (Perfekat, Futur I, Potencijal, Futur II). Both verbs exhibit a threefold paradigm: Long/Tonic forms, Short/Clitic forms, and Fused Negative forms:

1. Auxiliary BITI (To Be): - Clitic forms (Unstressed second-position): sam, si, je, smo, ste, su (Used for past tense Perfekat: Radio sam = I worked). - Tonic/Emphatic forms: jesam, jesi, jeste / je, jesmo, jeste, jesu (Used in questions and affirmative emphasis: Jesi li spreman? — Jesam!). - Negative forms: nisam, nisi, nije, nismo, niste, nisu (Fused negative copula: Nisam student).

2. Auxiliary HTETI (To Want / Auxiliary for Future I): - Clitic forms (Future Auxiliary): ću, ćeš, će, ćemo, ćete, će (Used to form Futur I: Radiću / Ja ću raditi = I will work). - Tonic/Emphatic forms: hoću, hoćeš, hoće, hoćemo, hoćete, hoće (Expresses active wanting or affirmative response: Hoćeš li kafu? — Hoću!). - Negative forms: neću, nećeš, neće, nećemo, nećete, neće (Refusal / negative future: Neću to da uradim).

These clitic forms must strictly adhere to Wackernagel's Law occupying the clause's second syntactic position.
