Second-Position Clitic Order (Wackernagel's Law) in Serbian
Second-Position Clitic Order (Enklitike i red reči)
Unstressed clitics cluster strictly in clause second position in an unalterable sequence: question li > modal auxiliaries (bih) > future ću > dative pronouns > accusative/genitive pronouns > se > auxiliary je.
In Serbian syntax, unstressed grammatical words (enclitics / enklitike) are strictly ruled by *Wackernagel's Law (Vakernagelov zakon): they can never stand in sentence-initial position and must cluster into the second syntactic position (drugo mesto u rečenici)* immediately following the first accented word or phrase.
Strict Internal Hierarchy of the Serbian Clitic Cluster: When multiple enclitics co-occur, they must strictly follow this linear order: 1. Question Particle: li (Da li, Znaš li) 2. Verbal Auxiliaries (Except 3rd sg. 'je'): - Conditional: bih, bi, bismo, biste, bi - Future: ću, ćeš, će, ćemo, ćete, će - Past: sam, si, smo, ste, su 3. Dative Short Pronouns: mi, ti, mu, joj, nam, vam, im 4. Accusative & Genitive Short Pronouns: me, te, ga, je (ju), nas, vas, ih 5. Reflexive Particle: se 6. Past Auxiliary 3rd sg. 'je' (Always Pushed to Very Last!): je.
Illustrative Combinations: - On mi ga je dao. (He gave it to me: dative [mi] + accusative [ga] + auxiliary [je]). - Da li si mu se javio? (Did you contact him: question [li] + aux [si] + dat [mu] + refl [se]). - Petar bi mu to rekao. (Peter would tell him that: conditional [bi] + dat [mu] + acc [to]).
Starting a clause with a clitic (Sam ga video or Se zovem) is strictly prohibited in standard Serbian.

The professor explained that to us in detail at yesterday's introductory lecture.
Kada bi mi to rekao ranije, rado bih ti pomogao oko pripreme ispita.
If you had told me that earlier, I would have gladly helped you with exam preparation.
