Reflexive Verbs with Particle 'se' in Serbian
Reflexive Verbs with 'se' (Povratni glagoli)
Verbs constructed with unstressed clitic particle se, covering true reflexive actions (prati se), reciprocals (voleti se), and inherent reflexives (smejati se).
In Serbian grammar, *Reflexive Verbs (Povratni glagoli) are constructed using the unstressed reflexive clitic particle se (short form of the reflexive pronoun sebe*). They fall into three primary functional classes:
*1. True Reflexives (Pravi povratni glagoli): - The subject performs an action directly upon itself: - prati se (to wash oneself), oblačiti se (to dress oneself), češljati se (to comb oneself). - Can be substituted by the full emphatic pronoun sebe: On vidi sebe u ogledalu* (He sees himself in the mirror).
*2. Reciprocal Verbs (Uzajamno-povratni glagoli): - Two or more subjects perform identical mutual actions upon one another ('each other'): - upoznati se (to meet each other), voleti se (to love each other), dopisivati se (to correspond with each other), svađati se* (to argue with each other).
*3. Inherent Reflexives (Medijalni / Reflexiva tantum): - Verbs where se is a permanent lexical component expressing feelings, states, or involuntary processes with no non-reflexive counterpart: - smejati se (to laugh), bojati se (to be afraid of), nadati se (to hope), sećati se (to remember), baviti se* (to engage in).
Clitic Slot Rule: The particle se is a strict second-position enclitic: Danas se osećam dobro (Today I feel good) / Osećam se dobro.
