The Past Tense (Perfekat) in Serbian
Past Tense (Perfekat: l-participle + sam, si, je)
The universal spoken past tense formed with the present clitic auxiliary of biti (sam, si, je, smo, ste, su) + gender-agreeing l-participle (radio, radila, radili).
In modern Serbian, *Perfekat (Prošlo vreme)* is the standard, universally dominant past tense used across all registers of conversation, journalism, and literature:
1. Structural Formula: Auxiliary Clitic of BITI (sam, si, je, smo, ste, su) + Past Participle (-o / -la / -lo / -li / -le / -la)
Conjugation of 'raditi' (to work): - 1st sg.: ja sam radio (masc.) / radila (fem.) (I worked) - 2nd sg.: ti si radio (masc.) / radila (fem.) - 3rd sg.: on je radio / ona je radila / ono je radilo (Notice: auxiliary je IS kept* in Serbian, unlike Czech or Russian!) - 1st pl.: mi smo radili (masc.) / radile (fem.) - 2nd pl.: vi ste radili (masc.) / radile (fem.) - 3rd pl.: oni su radili / one su radile / ona su radila*.
2. Clitic Ordering and Inversion: Because sam, si, je, smo, ste, su are second-position clitics: - When subject pronoun or adverb comes first: Ja sam radio*, Juče smo radili. - When sentence begins with the verb (Inversion): Participle comes first, followed by clitic: Radili smo celog dana (NOT Smo radili*!).
3. Negative Perfekat: Formed using fused negative auxiliary forms nisam, nisi, nije, nismo, niste, nisu: Nisam video (I did not see), Nismo znali (We did not know).
