The Future Tense (Futur I) in Serbian

In Serbian grammar, *Futur I (Buduće vreme) expresses actions that will take place in the future. It is constructed using the unstressed short forms of the auxiliary verb hteti (ću, ćeš, će, ćemo, ćete, će) combined with the infinitive of the main verb (or a da + present* clause):

1. Two Standard Syntactic Patterns: - Pattern A (When subject/adverb precedes the verb): Pronoun/Noun + Clitic Auxiliary + Full Infinitive: - Ja ću raditi* (I will work) - Mi ćemo čitati (We will read) - Sutra će profesor doći (Tomorrow the professor will come). - Pattern B (When the verb begins the sentence / Inversion): The auxiliary clitic fuses with the truncated infinitive stem (dropping -ti): - raditi + ću → radiću (I will work) - čitati + ćemo → čitaćemo (We will read) - govoriti + ćete → govorićete - Verbs in -ći do NOT drop -ći: doći + ću → doći ću (written separately!), reći ću, moći ćemo*.

*2. The Balkan Subjunctive Alternative (da + prezent): In Serbian, the infinitive can be freely replaced by the synonymous analytic construction ću + da + present: Ja ću da radim = Ja ću raditi*.

3. Negative Futur I: Uses fused negative forms neću, nećeš, neće, nećemo, nećete, neće + infinitive / da + prezent: Neću raditi / Neću da radim (I will not work).
