The Balkan Subjunctive: Da + Present vs. Infinitive (Da-konstrukcija)
A hallmark Balkan Sprachbund feature: modal, intentional, and future clauses prefer the finite da + present clause (Želim da radim) over the bare infinitive (Želim raditi).
A defining syntactic characteristic of Serbian as a member of the *Balkan Sprachbund (Balkanski jezički savez) is the historical retreat of the infinitive (infinitiv) and its widespread replacement by the analytic subjunctive construction da + Present Tense (Da-konstrukcija)*:
1. The Two Equivalent Constructions: - Standard Western / Infinitive Pattern: Moram raditi* (I must work), Želim putovati, Mogu doći. - Standard Serbian / Da-Construction Pattern: Moram da radim, Želim da putujem, Mogu da dođem. - Both constructions are grammatically standard, but da + present is overwhelmingly dominant in contemporary Serbian speech, news, and literature*.
2. Obligatory Use of 'Da + Present' (Different Subjects): When the subject of the main clause differs from the subject of the dependent subordinate clause, the da-construction is strictly mandatory (infinitive is impossible): - Želim da ti dođeš. (I want you to come). - Profesor traži da studenti pažljivo slušaju. (The professor requires that students listen attentively).
3. The Special Impersonal Verb 'trebati': When used modally with da + present, trebati remains impersonal in 3rd person singular: Treba da radimo* (We ought to work — NOT Trebamo da radimo* in formal standard Serbian!).

Svi studenti žele da uspešno polože sve završne ispite u junskom roku.
All students want to successfully pass all final exams in the June exam period.
Profesor je tražio da pažljivo pripremimo sve seminarske radove za sledeći čas.
The professor requested that we carefully prepare all seminar papers for the next class.
Treba da redovno ponavljamo gramatička pravila kako bismo bolje govorili jezik.
We should regularly review grammar rules in order to speak the language better.
