The Three-Way Demonstrative System (ovaj, taj, onaj) in Serbian
Three-Way Demonstratives (Pokazne zamenice: ovaj, taj, onaj)
Serbian distinguishes 3 spatial degrees: ovaj (this here, near speaker), taj (that there, near listener), and onaj (that over there, distant from both).
Unlike English (which distinguishes only this vs. that), Serbian maintains a precise *Three-Way Spatial Demonstrative System (Trodeoni sistem pokaznih zamenica)* corresponding to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grammatical persons:
1. OVAJ / OVA / OVO (This here — 1st Person Sphere): - Refers to objects physically, temporally, or emotionally close to the speaker (ovde = here): - ovaj čovek (this man next to me), ova knjiga (this book in my hands), ovo pismo (this letter).
2. TAJ / TA / TO (That there — 2nd Person Sphere): - Refers to objects close to the listener / addressee (tu = there by you) or previously mentioned in conversation: - taj čovek (that man near you), ta knjiga (that book you are holding), to pitanje (that issue you just raised).
3. ONAJ / ONA / ONO (That over there — 3rd Person Sphere): - Refers to objects distant from both the speaker and listener (tamo / onamo = over yonder in the distance): - onaj čovek (that man over there in the distance), ona zgrada (that building across the river), ono brdo (that hill yonder).
Declension: All three series inflect across all 7 cases like hard adjective paradigms (ovog, ovom, ovom; onog, onom, onim).
