Ablative Case (-den, -dan, -ten, -tan) in Turkish
Ablative Case (-den, -dan, -ten, -tan)
The ablative case (-den/-dan/-ten/-tan) indicates movement from/out of a place, point of origin, cause (because of), or standard of comparison.
The Turkish Ablative Case (Ayrılma Durumu or Çıkma Hali) uses the suffix -DAn (-den, -dan, -ten, -tan). It undergoes vowel harmony (e/a) and consonant assimilation (d → t after voiceless consonants f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p).
The ablative covers several essential grammatical functions: 1. Origin and Motion Away (answering Nereden? 'From where?' or Kimden? 'From whom?'): evden (from home), okuldan (from school), İstanbul'dan (from Istanbul), doktordan (from the doctor). 2. Material / Composition: ahşaptan bir masa (a table made of wood), ipekten bir kumaş (a fabric of silk). 3. Cause or Reason: korkudan (out of fear), sevinçten (from joy), hastalıktan (due to illness). 4. Standard of Comparison: When comparing two entities, the benchmark takes the ablative: Ahmet Ali'den daha uzundur (Ahmet is taller than Ali). 5. Governed Verbs and Postpositions: Verbs like hoşlanmak (to like/enjoy), korkmak (to fear), bahsetmek (to talk about), nefret etmek (to hate), and postpositions like sonra (after) and önce (before) strictly require an ablative complement (köpekten korkmak, dersten sonra).
Pronouns: benden, senden, ondan, bizden, sizden, onlardan.
