Locative Case (-de, -da, -te, -ta) in Turkish
Locative Case (-de, -da, -te, -ta)
The locative case (-de/-da/-te/-ta) indicates static location in time or space (in, on, at) and possession in 'var/yok' sentences.
The Turkish Locative Case (Bulunma Durumu or Kalma Hali) uses the suffix -DA (-de, -da, -te, -ta). It follows both Major Vowel Harmony (a/e) and Consonant Assimilation: after voiceless consonants (f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p — mnemonically Fıstıkçı Şahap), the initial d hardens into t (parkta, ofiste, sınıfta).
The locative answers the questions Nerede? (Where at?), Kimde? (With/on whom?), and Ne zaman? (When?): 1. Location in space: evde (at home), masada (on the table), İstanbul'da (in Istanbul). 2. Time: saat üçte (at three o'clock), mayısta (in May), yazda (in summer). 3. Possession with var/yok: When paired with var (there is) or yok (there is not), the locative expresses current physical possession: Bende para var (I have money on me), Ahmet'te anahtar yok (Ahmet doesn't have the key on him).
Crucially, distinguish the attached case suffix -de/-da (written together with the word) from the separate conjunction de / da (meaning 'also / too', written as a separate word, which never undergoes consonant hardening into te/ta).
