Compound Tenses (Birleşik Zamanlar) in Turkish
Compound Tenses (Story, Rumor, Condition)
Compound tenses stack a second aspect marker onto a tense stem: Hikaye (-dI = past), Rivayet (-mIş = rumor), and Şart (-sA = condition).
Turkish Compound Tenses (Birleşik Çekimli Fiiller) are formed by stacking an auxiliary copula clitic (idi / -DI, imiş / -mIş, ise / -sA) onto an already inflected tense base. This allows nuanced temporal and modal expressions:
1. *Past Aspect / Story (Hikaye Birleşik Zamanı with -(y)dI): - Continuous Past (Şimdiki Zamanın Hikayesi): yap-ıyor-du (he was doing / used to do). - Past Habitual (Geniş Zamanın Hikayesi): yap-ar-dı (he used to do routinely). - Past Future (Gelecek Zamanın Hikayesi): yap-acak-tı (he was going to do / was supposed to do). - Past Perfect (Duyulan Geçmiş Zamanın Hikayesi): yap-mış-tı (he had already done). 2. Reported Aspect / Rumor (Rivayet Birleşik Zamanı with -(y)mIş): - Expresses secondhand reports about ongoing or future actions: gel-iyor-muş (they say he is coming / apparently he is coming), al-acak-mış (they say he will buy). 3. Conditional Aspect (Şart Birleşik Zamanı with -(y)sA): - Adds an 'if' condition to a specific tense: gel-iyor-sa (if he is coming right now), bit-ti-yse* (if it is already finished).
These compound structures provide Turkish with immense precision to describe background actions in narrative discourse.
