Ukrainian participles combine verbal action with adjectival agreement; passive participles in -ний/-тий (написаний, розбитий) are highly productive, while active participles are stylistically restricted.
In Ukrainian, a Participle (дієприкметник) is a special form of the verb that expresses an attribute of an object produced by an action, declining like an adjective in gender, number, and case.
1. *Passive Participles (Пасивні дієприкметники): Extremely productive and widespread. Formed from transitive perfective or imperfective verbs with suffixes -н- / -ен- or -т-: - Suffix -ний / -ений: написати → написаний (written), зробити → зроблений (done), прочитати → прочитаний (read). - Suffix -тий: відкрити → відкритий (open/opened), розбити → розбитий (broken), мити → митий* (washed).
2. *Active Participles (Активні дієприкметники): In modern standard Ukrainian, present active participles with -чий (читаючий, бажаючий) are strongly discouraged and stylistically unnatural, considered calques from Russian or Church Slavonic. Authentic Ukrainian replaces them with: - Relative clauses with який: той, хто читає instead of читаючий. - True adjectives: бажаний instead of бажаючий. - Past active participles in -лий: пожовклий (yellowed), заснулий (asleep), дозрілий* (ripened).
Passive participles also form impersonal predicative words ending in -но / -то: книгу прочитано (the book has been read).

На столі лежала відкрита книга з яскравими ілюстраціями.
An open book with colorful illustrations was lying on the table.
Осінній вітер тихо кружляв пожовкле листя в старому саду.
The autumn wind was quietly swirling the yellowed leaves in the old garden.
Цей важливий документ було підписано обома сторонами вчора.
This important document was signed by both parties yesterday.
