Impersonal Constructions (Безособові конструкції: треба, можна, слід, -но/-то)
Impersonal sentences describe states, necessity, permission, or completed results without a nominative subject, using modal words (треба, можна, слід) + dative, or verb forms on -но/-то.
In Ukrainian, Impersonal Constructions (безособові речення) denote states, environmental conditions, obligations, possibilities, or completed actions where no grammatical subject in the nominative case is present.
Key Impersonal Patterns: 1. Modal Predicative Words + Dative Case + Infinitive: - треба / потрібно: necessity (need to / must): Мені треба йти (I need to go). - можна: permission / possibility (can / allowed to): Тут можна сидіти (One may sit here). - не можна: prohibition (forbidden / cannot): Тут не можна палити (Smoking is not allowed here). - слід / варто: advisability (ought to / worthwhile): Вам варто звернутися до лікаря (You should consult a doctor).
2. Verbal Predicatives in -но / -то: - Distinctive Ukrainian construction derived from passive participles expressing an action viewed purely as a completed result, governing the direct object in the Accusative Case: Книгу написано (The book has been written — object книгу is accusative!). Міст збудовано (The bridge has been built). Усі вікна зачинено* (All windows have been closed).
3. Natural and Physical States: - Вечоріє (Dusk is falling), Світає (Dawn is breaking), Мене морозить (I am shivering), Йому пощастило (He got lucky).
