The Dative Case in Ukrainian
Dative Case (Давальний відмінок)
The dative case marks indirect objects (recipients), expressing 'to/for whom' (кому? чому?) with prominent masculine endings -ові/-еві or -у/-ю.
The Dative Case (Давальний відмінок) designates the recipient, addressee, or beneficiary of an action, answering кому? чому? (to whom? to what?).
Key endings in the singular: 1. Masculine nouns: Have two parallel endings: -ові / -еві / -єві (the authentic, historically standard Ukrainian ending) and -у / -ю: братові / брату, лікареві / лікарю, Сергієві / Сергію. When several masculine nouns appear adjacent, Ukrainian alternates them to avoid repetitive rhyming: пану професорові Іваненку or панові професору Іваненкові. 2. Feminine nouns ending in -а / -я: Take -і with characteristic velar consonant mutations: г → з (нога → нозі), к → ц (рука → руці), х → с (муха → мусі). 3. Neuter nouns: End in -у / -ю or -ові / -еві: місту / містові, життю / життєві.
Beyond direct recipients (дати другові книгу), the dative is essential for impersonal modal expressions of necessity, possibility, and age: Мені треба йти (I need to go), Йому тридцять років (He is 30 years old), Нам тепло (We are warm).
