The Locative Case in Ukrainian
Locative Case (Місцевий відмінок)
The locative case answers 'де?' (where?) or 'на кому/чому?', is always used with prepositions (в/у, на, по, про, при), and triggers consonant mutations (к→ц, г→з, х→с).
The Locative Case (Місцевий відмінок) is the only Ukrainian case that never occurs without a preposition. It answers the questions на кому? на чому? у чому? де? (in/on whom/what? where?).
Key governing prepositions: - в / у (in, inside): у місті (in the city), у шафі (in the wardrobe) - на (on, at): на столі (on the table), на роботі (at work) - по (along, over): по вулиці (along the street) - при (by, attached to): при університеті (at the university)
Crucial endings and phonological changes: 1. Ending -і: Triggers mandatory velar consonant mutations across all genders: - г → з: нога → на нозі, дорога → на дорозі, берег → на березі - к → ц: рука → у руці, річка → у річці, парк → у парку / парці - х → с: поверх → на поверсі, рух → у русі 2. Ending -у / -ю: Very common for masculine monosyllabic or back-vowel nouns: у лісі / у лісу, у саду, у Криму, на березі / на боку.
Learners often forget the consonant mutation when forming locatives (на рукі instead of the correct на руці).

У цій міській аптеці завжди можна знайти потрібні ліки.
One can always find the necessary medicine in this city pharmacy.
Влітку діти люблять відпочивати на теплому морі.
In summer children love to relax at the warm sea.
На засніженій дорозі водіям слід бути надзвичайно обережними.
Drivers should be extremely careful on the snow-covered road.
