The Accusative Case in Ukrainian
Accusative Case (Знахідний відмінок)
The accusative case marks direct objects of transitive verbs; animate nouns match the genitive, while inanimate nouns match the nominative.
The Accusative Case (Знахідний відмінок) is the standard case for the direct object of transitive verbs, answering the questions кого? (whom?) for animates and що? (what?) for inanimates.
Key morphological rules: 1. Feminine nouns ending in -а / -я: Take the distinct endings -у and -ю: книга → читаю книгу*, земля → бачу землю, сестра → люблю сестру. 2. Masculine Inanimate: Identical to the nominative: Я бачу новий стіл, Він будує міст. 3. Masculine Animate (Persons & Animals): Identical to the genitive ending -а / -я: Я зустрів друга, Ми бачили вчителя. 4. Neuter: Always identical to the nominative: Я бачу вікно, Він любить море. 5. Plural animacy: In the plural, animates take genitive plural (Я знаю цих студентів), while inanimates take nominative plural (Я купив нові олівці*).
The accusative is also governed by directional prepositions answering куди? (whither / where to?): іти в ліс (into the forest), покласти на стіл (onto the table), сісти за стіл (at/behind the table).
