The Genitive Case in Ukrainian
Genitive Case (Родовий відмінок)
The genitive case expresses possession, absence (немає), quantity after numbers (2, 3, 4 and 5+), and follows prepositions like до, біля, без, від, для.
The Genitive Case (Родовий відмінок) is one of the most versatile cases in Ukrainian, answering кого? чого? (of whom? of what?).
Key usages: 1. Possession: машина брата (the brother's car), будинок моєї подруги (my friend's house). 2. Absence and Negation with 'немає': У мене немає часу (I have no time), Тут немає лікаря (There is no doctor here). 3. After Quantities and Numbers: Numbers 2, 3, 4 take the genitive singular (or nominative plural agreement), while 5 and above strictly govern the genitive plural: п'ять гривень, десять студентів, багато книжок. 4. Prepositions governing Genitive: до (to), від (from), без (without), біля (near), для (for), після (after), через (because of/across).
The Masculine -а/-я vs. -у/-ю dilemma: In the genitive singular, masculine nouns take -а/-я if they denote distinct physical entities, people, towns, or countable units (брата, Києва, долара), but take -у/-ю for abstract concepts, substances, collective nouns, feelings, and territories (цукру, чаю, миру, болю, лісу). This distinction is a hallmark of Ukrainian declension.
