Partitive Genitive (Кількісно-віддільний родовий відмінок)
The partitive genitive expresses an indefinite part or quantity of an uncountable substance, liquid, or material (випити чаю = to drink some tea, купити хліба).
In Ukrainian, the Partitive Genitive (кількісно-віддільний родовий відмінок) is used with mass nouns, substances, liquids, and materials to express an indefinite part of a whole ('some of something'), rather than the entirety of the object.
Contrast between Accusative and Partitive Genitive: 1. Accusative (Entire / Specific Object): Я випив чай* (I drank the specific cup/portion of tea), Я з'їв хліб (I ate the loaf/piece of bread entirely). 2. Partitive Genitive (Indefinite Portion / Some): Я випив чаю (I drank some tea), Купи хліба (Buy some bread), Налий мені води (Pour me some* water).
Masculine Ending -у / -ю: In the singular, masculine mass and substance nouns characteristically take the genitive ending -у / -ю: цукру (sugar), меду (honey), сиру (cheese), борщу (borscht), шоколаду (chocolate), соку (juice).
It is also regularly triggered by quantitative container phrases: склянка води (a glass of water), чашка кави (a cup of coffee), кілограм яблук (a kilogram of apples), шматок пирога (a piece of pie).
