Noun Gender in Ukrainian
Noun Gender (Чоловічий, жіночий, середній рід)
Ukrainian nouns belong to one of three grammatical genders: masculine (ending in consonant/-й), feminine (ending in -а/-я or soft sign), or neuter (ending in -о/-е/-я).
In Ukrainian, every noun has an inherent grammatical gender (граматичний рід): masculine (чоловічий рід), feminine (жіночий рід), or neuter (середній рід). Gender dictates how adjectives, demonstratives, possessives, and past-tense verbs agree with the noun throughout the clause.
Basic gender markers in the nominative singular: 1. Masculine: Most nouns ending in a hard or soft consonant (брат, стіл, день, гай), plus male persons ending in -а/-я (батько, Микола, суддя). 2. Feminine: Nouns ending in -а or -я (книга, земля, надія), as well as 3rd-declension nouns ending in a soft sign after a consonant (ніч, любов, радість, тінь). 3. Neuter: Nouns ending in -о, -е, -є (місто, море, сонце, життя, поле), and young animal nouns ending in -а/-я (кошеня, лоша).
Learners coming from Russian or Polish should watch out for gender divergences: for example, собака (dog), біль (pain), степ (steppe), and нежить (cold/runny nose) are masculine in Ukrainian (вірний собака, сильний біль), whereas in Russian собака is feminine. Always learn new vocabulary together with its gender and adjectival form.
