Adjective Agreement in Ukrainian
Adjective Agreement (Узгодження прикметників)
Ukrainian adjectives agree in gender, number, and case with the noun they modify, divided into hard (-ий, -а, -е, -і) and soft (-ій, -я, -є, -і) declensions.
Ukrainian adjectives (прикметники) strictly agree with their governing nouns in gender, number, and case. They are categorized into two primary declension groups based on stem-final consonant hardness:
1. *Hard Group (Тверда група): Stems ending in a non-palatalized consonant: - Masculine: -ий (добрий, новий, гарний) - Feminine: -а (добра, нова, гарна) - Neuter: -е (добре, нове, гарне) - Plural (all genders): -і (добрі, нові, гарні*)
2. *Soft Group (М'яка група): Stems ending in a soft consonant (-н-): - Masculine: -ій (синій, літній, вечірній, ранній) - Feminine: -я (синя, літня, вечірня) - Neuter: -є (синє, літнє, вечірнє) - Plural (all genders): -і (сині, літні, вечірні*)
Adjectives decline through all seven cases, mimicking noun case patterns. Note that in Ukrainian, adjectives ending in soft -ній retain soft vowels throughout declension (літнього, літньому, літнім). In the plural, adjectives do not distinguish gender in any case.
