Degrees of Comparison of Adjectives in Ukrainian
Degrees of Comparison (Ступені порівняння прикметників)
Comparative forms are made with suffix -іш-/-ш- (добріший, вищий) or 'більш', while superlatives add prefix най- (найкращий) or 'найбільш'.
Qualitative adjectives in Ukrainian have two degrees of comparison: Comparative (вищий ступінь) and Superlative (найвищий ступінь), each having synthetic (simple) and analytic (compound) forms.
1. *Comparative Degree (Вищий ступінь): - Synthetic: Formed with suffixes -іш- (теплий → тепліший, новий → новіший) or -ш- (високий → вищий with consonant mutation с/к + ш → щ; низький → нижчий with з/к + ш → жч; дорогий → дорожчий). - Analytic: Formed by adding більш (more) or менш (less) to the basic adjective: більш відомий, менш зручний*.
2. *Superlative Degree (Найвищий ступінь): - Synthetic: Prefix най- added to the simple comparative: найновіший, найвищий, найкращий. For emphasis, add як- or що-: якнайкращий (the best possible), щонайшвидший. - Analytic: Formed with найбільш / найменш: найбільш ефективний*.
Suppletive stems: добрий / хороший → кращий / ліпший → найкращий; великий → більший → найбільший; малий → менший → найменший; поганий → гірший → найгірший.
When comparing two items, use the conjunction ніж or як (+ nominative), or the preposition за (+ accusative): Київ більший, ніж Львів / Київ більший за Львів.
