Word Order and Information Structure (Topic-Focus) in Ukrainian
Word Order & Information Structure (Порядок слів та актуальне членування)
Ukrainian has flexible, non-configurational word order where standard SVO is neutral, but elements shift to the end (the rheme/focus) to highlight new or emphasized information.
Ukrainian possesses a flexible, morphologically rich word order (вільний порядок слів). Because rich case and agreement markings unambiguously identify grammatical roles, word order is primarily governed by Information Structure (Topic-Focus / Theme-Rheme) rather than rigid syntax.
1. Neutral Canonical Order: SVO (Subject - Verb - Object): - Used in neutral statements without special emotional emphasis: Студент читає нову книгу* (The student is reading a new book).
2. Communicative Focus (The Rheme / New Information at the End): - The end of the clause carries the highest informational weight (комунікативний центр): Цю книгу написав відомий професор (It was a famous professor who wrote this book — answering 'who wrote it?'). Відомий професор написав цю книгу* (The famous professor wrote this book* — answering 'what did he write?').
3. Direct vs. Inverted Adjective Placement: - Descriptive adjectives precede their noun (гарне місто). - Inverted post-position gives a solemn, poetic, folklore, or official classification nuance: мова солов'їна, полинь гірка, число дробове.
4. Particle and Emphatic Fronting: Adverbs of place and time often open the sentence to establish the contextual setting (Вчора ввечері ми дивилися фільм).

My sincere thoughts always return to my sunny homeland.
Студенти уважно слухали цікаву лекцію відомого професора історії.
The students were listening carefully to an interesting lecture by a famous history professor.
