Conjunctions (Coordinating & Subordinating) in Ukrainian
Conjunctions (Сурядні та підрядні сполучники)
Ukrainian conjunctions link equal clauses (coordinating: і/й, та, але, проте, або) or introduce dependent clauses (subordinating: бо, тому що, якщо, щоб, хоча).
In Ukrainian, conjunctions (сполучники) join words, phrases, or clauses together and are divided into two main classes:
1. *Coordinating Conjunctions (Сурядні сполучники): Link grammatically equal parts: - Connecting (єднальні): і / й (and), та (and / but), також (also), як... так і (both... and). - Adversative (протиставні): але (but), а (and/while/whereas), проте (however), однак (nevertheless), зате (on the other hand). - Separating (розділові): або (or), чи (or / whether), то... то (now... now), чи то... чи то*.
2. *Subordinating Conjunctions (Підрядні сполучники): Introduce subordinate clauses and express logical relations: - Cause: бо (for/because), тому що (because), оскільки (since/inasmuch as). - Condition: якщо (if), якби (if only / counterfactual). - Purpose: щоб (in order to / so that + past tense or infinitive). - Concession: хоча / хоч (although / even though), незважаючи на те що (despite the fact that). - Time: коли (when), поки (while/until), після того як* (after).
Punctuation rule: A comma is mandatory before adversative coordinating conjunctions (але, а, проте) and before all subordinating conjunctions (бо, що, щоб, якщо).
Examples
Ми вирішили піти на прогулянку, хоча на вулиці падав дрібний дощ.
We decided to go for a walk, although light rain was falling outside.
Він не прийшов на важливу зустріч, тому що запізнився на ранковий поїзд.
He did not come to the important meeting because he was late for the morning train.
Студенти наполегливо вчаться, щоб успішно скласти всі іспити.
The students study persistently in order to successfully pass all exams.
Ця книга не лише цікава, але й надзвичайно корисна для навчання.
This book is not only interesting, but also extremely useful for studying.
