Relative Clauses with Який / Котрий (Підрядні означальні речення)
Relative clauses modify a head noun using connective words: 'який' (who/which/that, agreeing in gender/number with the head noun, case dictated by its clause), 'котрий', or invariable 'що'.
In Ukrainian, Relative Clauses (підрядні означальні речення) provide essential or descriptive information about a antecedent noun in the main clause, linked by relative pronouns:
1. The Relative Pronoun 'який, яка, яке, які' (Which / Who / That): - The primary and most versatile relative connector. - Gender and Number: Must agree strictly with the antecedent noun in the main clause. - Case: Dictated entirely by its grammatical function within the relative clause itself: Ось книга (f.sg.nom), яку (f.sg.acc - direct object) я прочитав. (Here is the book that I read). Я зустрів друга (m.sg.acc), який (m.sg.nom - subject) живе в Києві. (I met a friend who lives in Kyiv). Будинок (m.sg.nom), біля якого (m.sg.gen - preposition) ми стоїмо.* (The house near which we are standing).
2. The Relative Pronoun 'котрий, котра, котре, котрі' (Which one specifically): - Emphasizes selection among alternatives, order in sequence, or time expressions (людина, котра знає відповідь).
3. The Invariable Particle 'що': - Used colloquially as an uninflected relative pronoun (книга, що лежить на столі).
Punctuation: The relative clause is strictly enclosed by commas.
