Indirect & Reported Speech (Непряма мова)
Reported speech converts direct quotes into subordinate clauses using conjunctions 'що' (statements), 'щоб' (requests/commands), and 'чи' (yes/no questions) without tense backshifting.
In Ukrainian, Reported / Indirect Speech (непряма мова) conveys someone else's statements, questions, or commands within a complex sentence. Unlike English (which requires strict tense backshifting like present → past), Ukrainian retains the original tense used by the original speaker.
1. Reporting Statements: Use the conjunction що (that): - Direct: Оксана сказала: «Я живу в Києві». - Indirect: Оксана сказала, що вона живе в Києві. (Notice живе remains in the present tense!).
2. Reporting Yes/No Questions: Use the interrogative particle чи (whether / if): - Direct: Тарас запитав: «Ти прийдеш завтра?» - Indirect: Тарас запитав, чи я прийду завтра.
3. Reporting Commands & Requests: Use the conjunction щоб followed by the past tense or infinitive: - Direct: Викладач сказав: «Прочитайте цей текст!» - Indirect: Викладач сказав, щоб ми прочитали цей текст.
4. Pronoun and Person Shifts: 1st-person pronouns (я, ми) shift to 3rd-person (він, вона, вони) from the reporter's perspective. The vocative case in direct quotes turns into a dative or prepositional indirect object (Мамо, ходи! → Син покликав маму).

Олена сказала, що вона вже купила квитки на вечірню виставу.
Olena said that she had already bought tickets for the evening performance.
Мій друг запитав мене, чи планую я поїхати до Львова цими вихідними.
My friend asked me whether I planned to go to Lviv this weekend.
Викладач суворо нагадав студентам, щоб вони вчасно здали курсові роботи.
The lecturer strictly reminded the students that they should submit term papers on time.
Сусід поцікавився, звідки ми привезли такі гарні та свіжі квіти.
The neighbor inquired where we had brought such beautiful and fresh flowers from.
