Question Words in Ukrainian
Question Words (Питальні слова: хто, що, де, коли...)
Ukrainian question words include interrogative pronouns (хто, що, який, чий, котрий) which decline, and interrogative adverbs (де, куди, коли, як, чому).
In Ukrainian, question words (питальні слова) initiate interrogative sentences and fall into two grammatical categories:
1. Declinable Interrogative Pronouns: - хто? (who?) and що? (what?): Decline through all cases (хто, кого, кому, кого, ким, на кому / що, чого, чому, що, чим, на чому). - який? яка? яке? які? (which / what kind of?): Declines like a hard or soft adjective. - чий? чия? чиє? чиї? (whose?): Declines to match the gender, number, and case of the possessed noun. - котрий? (which one in order? what time?: котра година?).
2. Invariable Interrogative Adverbs: - де? (where? location) - куди? (where to? destination/direction) - звідки? (where from? origin) - коли? (when?) - чому? / навіщо? (why? / for what purpose?) - як? (how?) - скільки? (how much / how many? governs genitive plural: скільки коштує?)
Learners should strictly distinguish static location де? (Де ти живеш?) from directional motion куди? (Куди ти йдеш?), and avoid confusing чому (cause/reason) with навіщо (intention/goal).
