Demonstrative Pronouns in Ukrainian
Demonstrative Pronouns (Вказівні займенники: цей, той, такий)
Demonstrative pronouns point to proximal entities (цей, ця, це, ці = this/these), distal entities (той, та, те, ті = that/those), and qualities (такий = such).
Demonstrative pronouns (вказівні займенники) in Ukrainian serve to distinguish objects based on proximity to the speaker or to indicate qualitative characteristics.
Primary demonstrative paradigms: 1. Proximal ('This / These'): Refers to objects close in space, time, or context: - Masculine: цей (цей день) - Feminine: ця (ця книга) - Neuter: це (це місто) - Plural: ці (ці студенти) 2. Distal ('That / Those'): Refers to objects further away or previously mentioned: - Masculine: той (той чоловік) - Feminine: та (та вулиця) - Neuter: те (те дерево) - Plural: ті (ті люди) 3. Qualitative and Quantitative: такий, така, таке, такі (such, so, of this kind) and стільки (so much / so many).
Demonstratives decline through all cases, agreeing with their noun. In colloquial speech, це also acts as an invariable demonstrative particle in identifying definitions (Це мій брат = This is my brother).
