Possessive Pronouns in Ukrainian
Possessive Pronouns (Присвійні займенники: мій, твій, наш...)
Possessive pronouns (мій, твій, наш, ваш, свій) agree in gender, number, and case with the possessed noun, while 3rd-person forms (його, її, їхній/їх) indicate the possessor.
Possessive pronouns (присвійні займенники) denote ownership or relation and decline like adjectives to agree with the possessed noun in gender, number, and case.
Key forms in the nominative singular & plural: - 1st person: мій (m), моя (f), моє (n), мої (pl) / наш (m), наша (f), наше (n), наші (pl). - 2nd person: твій (m), твоя (f), твоє (n), твої (pl) / ваш (m), ваша (f), ваше (n), ваші (pl). - 3rd person: Invariable genitive forms його (his/its) and її (her/its), alongside the declinable adjective-like plural pronoun їхній, їхня, їхнє, їхні (their).
The reflexive possessive 'свій': The pronoun свій, своя, своє, свої refers back to the subject of the clause, meaning 'one's own': Я люблю свою сім'ю (I love my family), Він узяв свої речі (He took his [own] things). Using його instead of свій indicates that the item belongs to another person (Він узяв його речі = He took someone else's things).
Ukrainian strictly favors свій whenever the possessor coincides with the grammatical subject of the clause.
