The Imperative Mood in Ukrainian
Imperative Mood (Наказовий спосіб дієслів)
The imperative mood expresses commands and requests, formed with distinct suffixes: -и/-іть (пиши/пишіть) or soft/zero endings (роби/робіть, читай/читайте).
The Imperative Mood (Наказовий спосіб) expresses commands, polite requests, invitations, instructions, or prohibitions. Ukrainian has three direct synthetic imperative persons:
1. 2nd Person Singular ('ти' form): - Stems with end-stress or consonant clusters take -и: пиши!, іди!, роби!, мовчи!, бери! - Stems after a vowel take -й: читай!, слухай!, працюй!, пий! - Stems with stem-stress after a soft consonant take -ь (or zero after sibilants): стань!, будь!, ріж!, сядь!
2. 1st Person Plural ('ми' inclusive form — 'let's...'): - Endings: -імо (пишімо!, ходімо!), -ймо (читаймо!, працюймо!), -ьмо (будьмо!, сядьмо!).
3. 2nd Person Plural / Polite Singular ('ви' form): - Endings: -іть (пишіть!, ідіть!, робіть!), -йте (читайте!, слухайте!), -ьте (будьте!, сядьте!).
Third-person commands ('let him/them...'): Formed analytically with the particle хай or нехай + present/future indicative: Хай він зачекає (Let him wait), Нехай вони заходять (Let them come in).
Vowel Alternation (о, е → і) occurs in the 1st and 2nd person plural forms: нести → несіть, берегти → бережіть.
