The conditional mood expresses hypothetical situations, wishes, or polite requests, formed using the past tense verb + particle 'б' (after vowels) or 'би' (after consonants).
The Conditional Mood (Умовний спосіб) in Ukrainian denotes hypothetical, potential, or counterfactual actions dependent on certain conditions, as well as polite requests and wishes.
Formation Formula: $$\text{Past Tense Form (-в, -ла, -ло, -ли)} + \text{Particle } \mathbf{б} \text{ or } \mathbf{би}$$
Euphonic Selection of б vs. би: 1. Use б immediately after a word ending in a vowel: я хотіла б*, ми пішли б, вона знала б, якби я знав. 2. Use би immediately after a word ending in a consonant: я хотів би, він міг би, він сказав би, він знав би*.
Word Order and Flexibility: The particle б / би is mobile and does not have to stand strictly after the verb; it frequently attaches to conjunctions like якби (if only) or щоб (in order to / so that): Якби я мав час, я обов'язково прийшов би (If I had time, I would definitely come).
Polite requests commonly use the conditional: Я хотів би запитати (I would like to ask), Ви не допомогли б мені? (Could you please help me?).
